I worked in a mental institution years ago as a maintenance man. When i first started, the veteran maintenance men gave me a set of rules on day one. "Guard your tool belt." Your screwdrivers, prybars, certainly my utility knife and above all my hammer, the preferred choice of the psychopathic schizophrenics favorite tool of attempted theft from your belt. We had to guard our tools like they were sidearms. For obvious reasons. It was an unnerving job at times. But the orderlies helped to keep an eye on the most mental cases. The orderlies also forewarned us of the most violent offenders. Mmmhumm. 😳

I'm a Southie native. Been here 46 years. My mother + father were also born + raised in South Boston. Working class, both had multiple jobs. They busted their ass to give me + my brother anything we wanted. I was able to attend Catholic School for all 12yrs. Watching this as an adult bums me out so much more. I also thought me + my bestie would live in Southie forever, raise kids side by side etc...more then 1/2 my generation is dead. A 1/3 in jail + the few survivors such as myself, if we can still afford to live in the gentrification that is now Southie, are looking back on this scene with a whole other outlook then we did 25 yrs ago. That Southie Matt Damon's talking about...long gone. No more 3 family homes with children playing. We have condo after condo, a bar or liquor store every other block. Broadway used to be Woolworths, Brighams Ice Cream + a ride on the horse outside of Sands. Now its fresh outta college or worse the late twenty somethings who still act like frat brats in + out of bar after bar. Want to make a point that most of my generation from Southie are dead due to this great plan of gentrification. They wanted the South Boston natives out so they could build this condo city we now have. I have absolutely no problem with that except their plans never included the residents already here. The city, realtors, politicians push South Boston as this up + coming neighborhood. My problem is there was nothing wrong with it the way it was. We all could've lived together. I'm still here, hanging on by my finger nails, not recognizing the neighborhood I've seen everyday for 46 years. I'm so proud of my friends that did leave Southie + are thriving. But this Southie girl aint goin nowhere lol 🍀Ty for letting me rant if anyone actually read this ✌️💙
